Sheet "The Mermaid and Kuts: A Forest Song" 2020

To the 150th anniversary of the birth of Lesya Ukrainka.

Kuts and the Mermaid are characters in Lesya Ukrainka’s fairy-tale drama "The Forest Song". In the story, they personify the demonic, elemental forces of the forest and water, which are hostile or contemptuous toward humans.

Sofia Karaffa-Korbut is a Ukrainian graphic artist who has illustrated about 60 works by Ukrainian writers.

The artist created images of Zaliznyak and Gonta, Karmelyuk and Dovbush, Hamalia and Prometheus, Ivan Pidkova and Jan Hus on paper. She illustrated Shevchenko's "Kobzar".

Her drawings for Lesya Ukrainka's drama extravaganza "Forest Song" deserve special attention, which are considered the pinnacle of her work.

These drawings are reproduced on postage stamps of the "Sofya Karaffa-Korbut" series, which Ukrposhta officially put into circulation on July 25, 2020, to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding poetess Lesya Ukrainka.
