The 65th Separate Mechanized Brigade “Velykyi Luh” was formed in April 2022 as part of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Since June of that year, its soldiers have been continuously carrying out combat missions in the Zaporizhzhia sector; in particular, they participated in the liberation of Robotyne during the 2023 counteroffensive and the subsequent defense of the Robotyne salient.
On December 20, 2024, the brigade was awarded the honorary name “Velykyi Luh”—in honor of the historic region on the Lower Dnipro, considered the cradle of the Zaporizhzhia Cossacks. In ancient times, the word “luh” did not refer to an open grassy plain, but to a forested river floodplain. For the Zaporizhian Cossacks, Velykyi Lug was a symbol of freedom, strength, and a reliable refuge.
The brigade’s insignia reflects this Cossack heritage: the chevron depicts a Cossack with a musket and a spear—a traditional symbol of the Zaporizhian Host. The Latin inscription “Pratum Magnum” translates as “Velykyi Lug” and underscores the connection between today’s defenders and the centuries-old military tradition of southern Ukraine.
