Mass Shootings at Babyn Yar (Kyiv) (1941–1943)
Babyn Yar is a ravine on the northwestern outskirts of Kyiv that, during the German occupation in World War II, became a site of mass shootings and a vast necropolis.
In just those two days, 33,771 Jews—men, women, and children of all ages—were shot at Babyn Yar.
Executions in the ravine continued throughout the entire period of the German occupation of Kyiv. In addition to Jews, the Nazis murdered Roma, patients from a psychiatric hospital, Soviet prisoners of war, and Ukrainian nationalists—including members of the OUN (such as the poet Olena Teliha).
According to various historical estimates, between 90,000 and 100,000 people perished at Babyn Yar (of whom more than 65,000–70,000 were Jews).
