Since 1996, Faraday has been Ukraine’s only Antarctic station, located 7 km from the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It operates year-round and serves as a meteorological and geophysical observatory.

The station’s primary purpose is to conduct scientific research in Antarctica. All operations of the station and the National Antarctic Scientific Center are dedicated to fulfilling this mission.

The entire complex of buildings is situated on the rocky foundation of Galindez Island. Most of them were constructed between 1979 and 1980

Founded in 1947 as the British “Faraday” station; moved to Galindez Island in 1954; in February 1996, it was transferred by Britain to Ukraine and renamed in honor of the outstanding Ukrainian scientist, Academician Volodymyr Vernadsky, the first president of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The first Ukrainian Antarctic expedition (1996–1997) paid a symbolic price of one pound sterling for the station during the transfer.

The lowest temperature recorded at the station was −47 °C. Annual precipitation for the period 1986–2011 ranged from 220 to 670 mm.
