The Galahans were a Cossack and yeoman family, later a noble family on the Right Bank and Left Bank of Ukraine in the second half of the seventeenth and early twentieth centuries, descended from the Cossack Ivan Galahan.

The most famous representative of this family was Hryhorii Pavlovych Halahan, a large landowner in Poltava and Chernihiv, a public figure, a Ukrainian philanthropist. He financially supported Ukrainian artists and writers, contributed to the publication of the Kyivska Poshtina magazine, and so on.

Hryhorii Halahan was one of the founders of the men's and women's gymnasiums in Pryluky, and the founder of the Pavlo Halahan College, one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Kyiv, established in memory of his deceased son, Pavlo.

In the obituary for Hryhoriy Halahan's death in September 1888, the Kyivan newspaper wrote: “On the example of the creation of the College, we see what can be done in our society by a person of high state and social status, who possesses great material wealth, if he is inspired by the desire for the public good.”
