The Tovtrovy ridge stretches for over 200 kilometers from Lviv region through Ternopil, where it is called Medobory, Khmelnytskyi region and to the Dniester valley. There are caves where bats winter, white limestone outcrops, ancient forests, and at the foothills - wet ravines, the sparkling Dniester and picturesque towns and villages. As Lesya Ukrainka accurately described: “The beauty of Ukraine, Podillia! It spread out gently, carelessly”.
Millions of years ago, these hills were a barrier reef of the Sarmatian Sea, which spilled over the territory of modern Ukraine. Where forests and steppe grasses grow today, fish, mollusks, mosses and other inhabitants of the warm, shallow and not very salty sea once lived. Now it is a land with enormous biodiversity: more than 1,500 species of plants grow on the territory of the National Park, including endemics and relics of the glacial and post-glacial eras, more than 300 species of vertebrates and about a thousand invertebrates.
Dozens of species of flora and fauna of Podolskie Tovtry are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. Among them are the great sleep Pulsatilla grandis, the eagle owl Bubo bubo, the green lizard Lacerta viridis and the wild cat Felis silvestris, which are now depicted on stamps.
