The battle for Mariupol lasted from February 24 to May 20, 2022.
The defense of the hero city lasted 86 days, 82 of which were completely surrounded.

Politicians - accomplices of the “Russian world” (including OPFL deputies) helped the invaders create a humanitarian catastrophe in the city. From the very first days, the Russian military destroyed the city's life support facilities with aimed fire. In particular, utilities and equipment, warehouses with food and medicine, mobile phone towers and power lines, pumping stations and the main water supply from the reserve reservoir. All city buses prepared for the evacuation of the population were burned. Many civilians found themselves surrounded and unable to get out of the city.

On May 16-20, 2022, the city's defenders came out of hiding at Azovstal. The leaders of France, Turkey, Israel, and Switzerland were involved in negotiations on the withdrawal of Ukrainian soldiers from Azovstal.
After the withdrawal of the Ukrainian military, many of them are still waiting to be exchanged, according to the agreement. The Ukrainian government called the operation an evacuation.
