On February 24, it became almost the first large population center in Ukraine where the Russian invaders entered with tanks and other armored vehicles. They were met by the military and territorial defense fighters, gave battle and defeated a significant part of the enemy columns.

The shelling of a military unit, where at least 70 soldiers were killed, three vacuum bombs, the destruction of a thermal power plant, shelling by rockets and aircraft, bombings and terrible destruction, the streets were wiped from the face of the earth - this is how Okhtyrka took the blow of the Russian army and, thanks to the titanic efforts of Ukrainian defenders, survived . The invaders did not take the city and did not pass through it further.

For indomitability and continuous resistance, on March 24, 2022, the city of Okhtyrka was awarded the honorary title Hero City of Ukraine.
