On February 24, 2022, the day of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the battles for Mykolaiv began. On February 27, the Russian military began to actively use sabotage and reconnaissance groups. Mykolaiv became the first city where looters were tied to poles. Such a punishment awaited anyone who decided to get rich during times of grief and despair.

On March 1, the Russian occupation forces that tried to enter Mykolaiv, received a powerful blow and began to flee from there. The enemy tried to counterattack for several more days. The retreating Russian troops occupied the school, where they shot the principal. This was the first loss among the civilian population in the region. On March 7, the Russians made an attempt to capture Mykolaiv airport, but they failed. Subsequently, Ukrainian forces pushed the Russian army away from the city. Then the occupiers began to hit the civilian objects of Mykolaiv with cruise missiles.
On the morning of March 29, 2022, a cruise missile hit the building of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration and destroyed the central section from the first to the ninth floor without catching fire.
