In 2026, the Mykolaiv Zoo—one of the oldest in Europe—marks its 125th anniversary. Its unique collection comprises over 400 animal species (more than 3,000 individual animals), with around 190 of them listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

Amidst Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, and despite constant shelling and ongoing danger, the Mykolaiv Zoo continues to operate and welcome visitors. Despite disruptions to water and electricity supplies as well as funding challenges, the staff has managed to preserve both the zoo itself and its unique animal collection.

The commemorative stamp sheet features residents of the Mykolaiv Zoo: the Rothschild’s giraffe (*Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi*), the maned wolf (*Chrysocyon brachyurus*), the polar bear (*Ursus maritimus*), the rock hyrax (*Procavia capensis*), and the only snow leopard (*Panthera uncia*) in Ukraine.

The issue was designed by Ukrainian illustrator and soldier Viktor Harkusha, known by the call sign "Picasso."

The set includes:

  • the "125. Mykolaiv Zoo" stamp sheet
  • envelope First day Cover of C5 format
