Stamp sheet “Cities of Heroes. Sumy Region”

On February 24, 2022, the border towns in northern Ukraine became among the first targets of the Russian invasion.

Residents of Sumy, together with units of the Territorial Defense Forces, organized active resistance:

thousands of volunteers, having been armed, blocked the approaches to the city and held back the advance of Russian columns.

Trostyanets, one of the cities in the Sumy region hardest hit by the hostilities, was under occupation for 31 days. Despite the invaders’ atrocities, the townspeople, risking their lives, passed on vital information to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, organized evacuations, and provided people with medicine and food.

In April 2022, Russian troops were forced to leave the Sumy region.

To honor the feats, mass heroism, and resilience of citizens demonstrated in defending their cities during the repulsion of the Russian Federation’s armed aggression, a 2025 decree by the President of Ukraine awarded Sumy and Trostyanets the honorary title of “Hero City of Ukraine.”

The “Cities of Heroes. Sumy Region” postage block features the K3 building of Sumy State University (Sumy) and the “Round Courtyard” (Trostyanets).
